Head of Design
I’m a design practitioner with 15 years of experience in the fields of digital, interaction and service design. I studied Multimedia Design at Northumbria University, and was a founding director of a new media design agency in Newcastle upon Tyne. I returned to Northumbria University in 2004 to join the School of Design’s Centre for Design Research, where I was part of a multidisciplinary team delivering design research and consultancy to commercial and public sector clients including Nesta, UNISON, London Councils, Narec, CELS, Aimhigher, Rolls Royce, Age UK, Newcastle Hospitals Trust and Newcastle City Council. While at the School of Design I also taught on degree programs in Interactive Media, Graphic Design, Design Practice and Design Management, supervised final year Masters students and was part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) supervision team.
I strongly believe in simple and accessible forms of design and communication, and particularly enjoy bringing clarity to complex projects in educational and healthcare contexts by engaging with the public, patient groups and practitioners through interviews, workshop sessions, mapping and visualisation.
At MoveLab I am responsible for managing the design delivery of a range of physical activity interventions for long-term conditions, health and wellbeing. I’m currently managing the design and build of Changing Health – an online behaviour change programme for people with Type 2 diabetes that targets physical activity and diet through structured learning and personal coaching delivered via a mobile phone app and website.
