Dr Karolina Rygiel

Post-doctoral researcher

I completed my undergraduate and master’s degrees in molecular biology at Jagiellonian University in Poland. I moved to Newcastle where I did my PhD in an immunobiology lab researching mechanisms causing liver fibrosis in autoimmune liver diseases. I then joined the Mitochondrial Research Group and have been looking at muscle deterioration with age (sarcopenia) and age-related myopathies, such as Inclusion Body Myositis.

I am particularly interested in investigating mechanisms contributing to muscle wasting in order to discover suitable therapeutic interventions.
