Exercise training in patients with mitochondrial disease: Assessing the benefits.

Project:

Exercise training in patients with mitochondrial disease: Assessing the benefits.

Team:

    Aim:

Understand the effect of high intensity intermittent exercise on liver fat and metabolism in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

    Research Overview:

Previous studies have shown that exercise can be very important for patients with mitochondrial myopathies. However, it still remains unresolved as to whether patients with mitochondrial myopathies should be encouraged to exercise and if so, to what level/regime. This study will use MR techniques, metabolic studies and evaluation of muscle tissue to understand the effects of both endurance and resistance exercise on mitochondrial myopathies.

    Research Importance:

This study, following on from previous studies, will try and establish guidelines for other centers managing patients with mitochondrial disease.
